Butterfly Pea Flower Weight Loss Claims – Does it Work?

Today, we’re going to take a deep dive into the world of Butterfly Pea Flower weight loss claims.

As with any other weight loss supplement, this one also appears to be the next best thing to shed stubborn fat, but is that really the case or is this just another marketing gimmick – we’re about to find out.

Butterfly Pea Flower and Weight Loss – What’s the Connection?

The connection between Butterfly Pea Flower and weight loss is mainly founded on its antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties.

These properties are speculated to potentially increase metabolism, reduce inflammation, and thus assist in weight loss in one way or another.

Additionally, it’s been observed that Butterfly Pea Flower has a mild diuretic effect, which may help in losing water weight.

However, this effect doesn’t impact fat mass, an essential factor in sustained weight loss, so you can dismiss this one right away. Unless you’re cutting for a bodybuilding show, in which case you can actually also dismiss it, as there are far more potent diuretics available.

Interestingly, there’s another theory on how Butterfly Pea Flower might play a role in weight loss which stems from its content of Ternatins.

Ternatins are a group of flavonoids found in Butterfly Pea Flowers. [1]

Some older test-tube and rodent studies have suggested that these compounds may block the synthesis of fat cells in the body. [2

This could, in theory, help prevent weight gain and facilitate weight loss by limiting fat storage.

However, while these findings and theories appear to be somewhat promising, it’s pretty much safe to say that…

Does Butterfly Pea Flower Really Help with Weight Loss?

Butterfly Pea Flower does not really help with weight loss.

Not only are there no significant human trials or empirical evidence linking Butterfly Pea Flower to weight loss, but it is common knowledge that the only natural and effective way to lose weight is to eat in a caloric deficit, eat a balanced diet, and lead an active lifestyle.

Without that, short of a deadly or severe illness, nothing can lead to significant weight loss.

Can You Drink Butterfly Pea Flower Tea Every Day for Weight Loss?

As far as we know, there is no reason for you not to drink Butterfly Pea Flower tea every day.

However, its direct impact on weight loss will be non-existent.

At the same time, we also don’t really know if long-term daily use is safe. While there really isn’t a good reason to believe it would be unsafe, it’s still better to err on the side of caution.

What’s the Best Form of Butterfly Pea Flower to Use for Weight Loss?

Neither of these is the “best form for weight loss” since neither will help facilitate weight loss.

But if you want to know which one makes the most sense – allow me.

The most common forms of Butterfly Pea Flower are tea and powder, with tea being the most popular one. However, the earthy taste isn’t to everyone’s liking.

I, for one, didn’t really mind it when I gave it a try, but that’s just me.

Anyway, due to its unpopular taste, many people add milk and sugar to the tea, which unfortunately also adds extra calories, making it the opposite of “useful for weight loss”…

So, if you’re keen on trying Butterfly Pea Flower for weight loss, the liquid extract might just be your best bet.

It’s easy to use, and the taste is pleasant (kind of tastes like chamomile).

That said, this is, by far, the most expensive option, so we really wouldn’t recommend trying it out.

Are There Any Side Effects of Using Butterfly Pea Flower for Weight Loss?

Butterfly Pea Flower is usually very easily tolerated and is considered safe.

So, other than the fact that it’s completely inefficient for weight loss, the only side effects that can come from using Butterfly Pea Flower for weight loss are:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain

Do Any Other Supplements or Natural Remedies Have Better Effects on Weight Loss?

There are two natural supplements that come to mind that have a somewhat profound effect on weight loss, and those are:

  • Caffeine
  • Green tea extract

For starters, numerous studies have linked caffeine intake with increased metabolic rate and enhanced fat burning. [3]

This occurs due to its thermogenic properties.

In other words, caffeine raises your body’s core temperature and, as a result, increases the number of calories you burn throughout the day.

On the other hand, we have green tea extract, a heavy-hitter in the realm of weight loss supplements.

Green tea extract is rich in catechins which are known to aid weight loss by boosting metabolism and enhancing fat oxidation. [4]

Moreover, when combined with caffeine, the effects appear to be somewhat synergistic, providing a more pronounced impact on weight loss.

But even so – none of this matters unless you eat in a caloric deficit and you move around.

Best Lifestyle Practices for Weight Loss

We’ll keep this brief because there’s no need to overcomplicate weight loss – no matter what you heard so far.

In the end, it all comes down to eating fewer calories than you need and burning those same calories through physical activity.

Now, if you want to get a bit deeper, here’s what you can do:

  • Stay active: It doesn’t matter if this is 20 minutes of running, a two-hour weightlifting session, or playing basketball in the park. Keeping your body moving is a great way to burn extra calories and stay in good shape.
  • Eat clean: While the caloric deficit is ultimately the thing that matters when it comes to weight loss – eating a clean and balanced diet is also very important. For example, you can’t thrive on snacks even if you don’t consume too much of them because you’ll miss out on all the important macro and micro nutrients essential for your well-being.
  • Sleep at least 8 hours: No matter what you might think, there’s a minuscule chance you can live a healthy life with less than 8 hours of sleep on average. And if you can’t live a healthy life, there’s a good chance you’ll fall into unhealthy habits, leading to all kinds of problems, including obesity.
  • Drink water: We really don’t have to go into details. Drink enough water.

Is Butterfly Pea Flower Worth it for Weight Loss?

The hard truth is that Butterfly Pea Flower isn’t worth taking specifically for weight loss.

There is simply no evidence to suggest it has any weight-loss effects.

Also, judging from the all-encompassing ineffectiveness of most other weight loss supplements, it’s more than safe to say that Butterfly Pea Flower won’t cut it.

How We Rate Butterfly Pea Flower for Weight Loss: 1/5

Based on current evidence, we give Butterfly Pea Flower a 1 out of 5 for weight loss.

We thought for a second about giving it some room to grow. Maybe even adding a point for potential. But, there just doesn’t seem to be any indication that it could be beneficial in any way, and seeing how that’s almost universally true for fat burners, we easily settled on 1.

Conclusion

To wrap up, Butterfly Pea Flower might be an interesting supplement with a mighty blue tint and some potential to enhance brain function.

But at the same time, its effectiveness in promoting weight loss is arguably non-existent, so you might as well skip it.
